A Socket is the physical connection(s) on a computer system's motherboard that is designed to hold a central processing unit(s) ("CPU" ) regardless of the number of logical CPUs recognized by the computer system from that physical connection. Note that the socket capacity refers to the maximum number of processors that the server can be configured with, not the actual number. Consequently a server can be upgraded with additional processors with no change in subscription.
